Requirements for Use
  • Visual Flight Rules apply — see and be seen!
  • The airfield operator ensures operational safety.
  • Before each use, the PIC verifies that the operational areas are clear of any obstacles.
  • Airfield information is available on the website (https://www.edrf.de/pages/flugplatzinformationen).
  • Applies only to briefed pilots.
Flying Without an Operations Manager
  • I check the runway for its condition and for foreign objects.
  • I know where the emergency key for the fire engine is located and I have access to a phone.
  • I remember to log my flight details in Vereinsflieger or at v-tower.vereinsflieger.de.
  • I act on my own responsibility and at my own risk.
  • I make sure the gate area is visible and clear.
Departure Procedure
  • I determine which runway to use for take-off based on the conditions (e.g. windsock).
  • Take-off runway 07: Normal departure procedure without operating the gate.
  • Take-off runway 25: I perform my checks — including the engine check — preferably at the holding point.
  • Once ready for departure, I activate the gate using the PTT button as as described in Gate Control.
  • Make sure no vehicles or persons are in the area between the gates.
  • After activation, I have 2.5 minutes to backtrack and complete the take-off.
  • The gate reopens automatically after 2.5 minutes.
Departure Procedure — Radio Communication

I make blind calls to inform other pilots:

  • Dürkheim Radio, D-EFBD, Aquila A211, taxi to holdingpoint for runway 25/07
  • Dürkheim Radio, D-EFBD, backtrack runway 25
  • Dürkheim Radio, D-EFBD, lining up for departure runway 25
  • Dürkheim Radio, D-EFBD, leaving circuit to the north

Blind calls are essential.

Arrival Procedure
  • I announce myself in time via radio using a blind call.
  • I overfly the airfield from south to north to determine my landing direction from the windsock, and I check that the runway and the area between the gates are clear.
  • I query the current weather information (no guarantee of accuracy) by briefly pressing the radio button three times. The automated message is: “Wind #strength# aus #direction# empfohlene Piste 07 oder 25.”
  • I activate the gate by pressing the PTT button 6 times.
  • I have 2.5 minutes for the approach and subsequent landing.
  • I go around if persons or obstacles are between the gates.
  • I act on my own responsibility and at my own risk.
  • I log my flight in Vereinsflieger or at v-tower.vereinsflieger.de.

Arrival procedure – traffic pattern

Arrival Procedure — Radio Communication
  • Dürkheim Radio, D-EBOC, PA28, 5 min south of airfiled, altitude 2000ft inbound for landing
  • D-EBOC (turning) downwind runway 07
  • D-EBOC (turning) base runway 07
  • D-EBOC (turning) final runway 07
  • D-EBOC has vacated the runway
Gate Control
  • Gate control via the PTT button.
  • The pilot closes the gate by shortly pressing the PTT button 6x. This must be done during radio silence (no simultaneous voice traffic on the frequency).
  • After activation, the gate closes with a delay of approx. 15 seconds and remains closed for 2.5 minutes.
  • Shortly press the PTT button 6x:
    • The gate relay is triggered
    • Yellow flashing lights in the area between the gates start flashing
    • The announcement „SCHRANKE SCHLIEẞT“ is broadcast over the radio
    • The traffic light turns red and approx. 10 seconds later the gate closes
  • 30 seconds before the gate reopens, the announcement „SCHRANKE ÖFFNET IN 30 SEKUNDEN“ is broadcast
  • After 2.5 minutes the gate opens automatically
  • Pressing 6× again extends the closed period by another 2 minutes
    • Confirmed by the announcement „TIMER VERLÄNGERT“
  • Yellow warning lights are installed in the area between the gates; whenever they flash, the traffic lights are also red.
  • If pedestrians or vehicles are in the area between the gates:
    • Go around and wait until the gate has automatically opened after 2.5 minutes.
    • Then re-approach and close the gate again.

Gate area – Bad Dürkheim airfield

Operational Problems
  • The gate does not close or is not operational and the wind does not allow a take-off on runway 07 / landing on 25 → Do not take off or land! The PIC decides on their own responsibility.
  • On approach to runway 07 there are persons between the gates → Go around.
  • Objects or obstacles are on the operational areas → Do not take off or land; notify the airfield operator or, if possible, remedy the situation yourself.
Weather Information

Shortly press the PTT button 3x.
